SAIL AWAY (2018)

SAIL AWAY (2018)

Sail Away (2018)

Jarman, co-directed by Ella Becroft and Tama, and produced by Ilai Amir of Votre Arme.

It tells the story of Kevin, a young man who works in Quality Control at the town sardine factory. One day, on hearing the call of the wild, Kevin remembers his childhood dream of becoming a deep-sea sailor, and decides to leave his old life behind and launch into the unknown. He begins to build a fantastical boat in his backyard, much to the disdain of his family and friends.

Sail Away is about following your dreams, and being true to yourself - even if it means ignoring what conventionally equates to a successful or meaningful life.

The film is inspired by the cinematic techniques and clowning style of Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin, but in full colour and sound and with Tama's particular brand of humour. It's unique voice and style has captured the imagination of the New Zealand Film Commission as something fresh in the current landscape of filmmaking in New Zealand.

Possum (2016)

Director: Dave Whitehead

Stars: Taungaroa Emile, Duane Wichman-Evans, Te Ahitaewa Hakaraia-Hosking

Possum is a glimpse into a slice of kiwi (New Zealand) culture that is at the core of many New Zealanders. Like many others from the East Coast of the North Island in the 70’s, my father Wallace Whitehead, often took up contracts fencing, shearing or scrub cutting. I guess the money was ok, but it was certainly hard labor. It also often meant staying on site away from the family during the week. I remember how excited we were with dad coming home on Fridays with a big hug and bristles on his unshaven face.

Munted (2011)

Director: Welby Ings
Writer: Welby Ings
Stars: Ella Edward, Phil Peleton, Tammy Lee

Innocence and prejudice weave together in a child’s story of betrayal.
Munted is an unusual story about an accusation of pedophilia and its terrible consequences. Set in 1961 in a remote rural community, it tells the story of a ten-year old girl and her friendship with a brain damaged artist. Told through erosions between film and drawing the film is a lyrical and brutal account of the cost of rumour and prejudice.
